Planning ahead

Financial circumstances can change over time often quite quickly. By planning ahead you can allow for such changes and manage your money so ultimately you can enjoy your life.

For example, you may want to save up for a special item, such as a car, a holiday or a mobile phone. Try to work out how much you will need to put aside for saving, and remember the running costs as well as the purchase price.

You may know that some of the income or expenditure items are going to change, such as a forthcoming increase in your rent, or a pay rise in the pipeline. Try to put some figures to these changes, and consider how they might affect the budget chart that you have drawn up.

In the longer term, you may be thinking about renting a place of your own, or even owning your own home. And if you have a partner, you might need to consider what would happen if one of you were to give up work, perhaps in order to start a family. Again, try to put some numbers to these possibilities, and consider how they would affect the balance of your income and expenditure.
